Stephanie Acosta

Working across mediums, Guatemalan artist Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa explores the dynamics deployed by regimes of power through a personal lens of queer desire, tenderness, and spirituality. His research into the incidents around the violent censorship of a play in mid-1970s Guatemala resulted in Lugar de Consuelo (Place of Solace), a multipart work that includes costumes, etchings, watercolors, and a performance of the same name, now in MoMA´s collection.

Created in collaboration with the poet Wingston González, this new production, the work’s first staging in New York after public performances in Sao Paulo (2016) and Los Angeles (2017), casts the five characters in the censored play—a president, an oligarch, a soldier, a priest, and a scarecrow—as clownish archetypes of despotic power. According to González, Lugar de Consuelo is “a work about power and postcolonial memory where state violence is ritualized through disappeared bodies and science fiction imagery. The performers move between human, animal, plant, and mechanical states through performative zoomorphism and phytomorphism.” Performances will be presented in Spanish and English, “accessible without language barriers through physical fabulation and sound design.”

Utilizando distintos medios, el artista guatemalteco Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa explora las dinámicas que despliegan los regímenes de poder, desde una perspectiva que incluye el deseo queer, la ternura y la espiritualidad. Su investigación sobre los incidentes ocurridos en torno a la violenta censura de una obra de teatro a mediados de los años setenta en Guatemala, dio como resultado Lugar de consuelo (Place of Solace), una obra que incluye vestuario, grabados, acuarelas y una performance con el mismo título, que ahora forma parte de la colección del MoMA.

Creada con la colaboración del poeta Wingston González, esta nueva puesta en escena —la primera en Nueva York, luego de las funciones públicas en São Paulo (2016) y Los Ángeles (2017)— presenta a los cinco personajes de la obra censurada —un presidente, un oligarca, un soldado, un sacerdote y un espantapájaros— como arquetipos burlescos del poder despótico. Según González, Lugar de consuelo es “una obra sobre el poder y la memoria poscolonial en la que la violencia estatal se ritualiza mediante la desaparición de cuerpos e imágenes de ciencia ficción. Los intérpretes se alternan entre formas humanas, animales, vegetales y mecánicas mediante el zoomorfismo y el fitomorfismo performativos”. Las performances serán tanto en español como en inglés, “accesibles a todos sin barreras lingüísticas gracias a la fabulación física y el diseño sonoro”.

Las performances tendrán lugar del 16 al 28 de junio de 2026. Las performances se presentarán en inglés y en español, según se indica en el calendario a continuación.
